With the close of 2016 and the beginning of the new year I wanted to talk about the movies I am most anticipating for 2017.
10. Justice League
While I was making this list I was surprised to see Justice League so low, but at the same time I was glad that it made my countdown. I’m excited for Justice League because we are finally getting all of these A-List DC heroes on screen together, but I’m still cautiously optimistic about this movie. From the footage we’ve seen Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Batman seem to have promise, but I still don’t know how to feel about The Flash and Cyborg. I always liked Cyborg more as a Teen Titans hero, and I think the DC extended universe should have used Wally West for The Flash instead of Barry Allen.
9. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2
The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a fun popcorn flick, and after watching the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 I’m even more excited for this installment. The first movie focused on our superhero misfits becoming a team, and now we can finally see their chemistry shine even more with the sequel.
8. Thor: Ragnarok
I’m not the biggest Thor fan, but Marvel has been hyping this movie as a game changer. I think I’m more excited for the overall story of the Marvel universe than Thor’s story for this movie. But I can’t really say much about this film until we see a trailer, which will hopefully be released soon.
7. Kingsman: The Golden Circle
I was one of the first people to see the first Kingsman film when they had a special screening in New York City. I didn’t really know much about the movie, but was excited that Mark Millar and Mathew Vaughn were doing another film together. I was blown away with this spy thriller, and I have been patiently waiting for it’s sequel ever since. I’m glad that this series found a strong audience.
6. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
I KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS ARE THINKING!!
Why do I have this movie so high on my list? Honestly, it’s not because I think it’s going to be good, but I am still excited to see the movie. I have been a big fan of the Power Rangers franchise for a long time, and I want to see if this movie can actually bring us a character driven story. I’m a sucker for teen stories, and even if this movie is bad I might be able to have fun with it.
5. The Lego Batman Movie
This might be the best Batman movie we see on screen, which is weird to say since this is a movie focusing on lego characters. I’m a big fan of the original Lego Movie, and of course Will Arnett’s Batman was the star. After watching a few of the trailers I think this can be a great comedy movie, but most of all it’s a Batman movie actually focusing on the Bat family. It looks like both Robin and Batgirl will have key roles in the film, something that has never been truly fleshed out in any other big screen Batman movie.
4. Your Name – American Release
Your Name was released in Japan as the second highest grossing anime film ever, and in China as the highest grossing Japanese film. The movie had a special screening in LA to allow the film to become an Oscar contender. The American release for the Dub and Sub will be later in 2017. Ever since watching the trailer for this movie I have been anticipating this film. The animation looks gorgeous, and the story seems really interesting with a girl and a boy from different times switching bodies while they’re dreaming.
3. Wonder Woman
My top 3 was really hard to pick which order I wanted to put these films in, but I ended up choosing Wonder Woman as my third choice. Out of all the DC films I feel this is the movie with the most promise. Wonder Woman is a film that should have been made ages ago, but is finally gracing movie screens in 2017.
Unlike Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman is an origin story that the mainstream audience doesn’t really know. This is a needed origin story!
2. Star Wars Episode 8
Of course, after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens I want to see where Rey’s journey will continue in the future Star Wars installments. I love that the Star Wars franchise is keeping everything hush, hush about the storylines. It makes me even more excited for Star Wars Episode 8!
1. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Yes, I know we’ve had a few Spider-Man films already but now that Spider-Man is under Marvel’s banner I think we are truly going to have the comic book character come to life on the big screen. The first Toby Maguire film is one of the first things that got me into Marvel comic books. Spider-Man is one of my favorite heroes and he will always hold a special place in my heart. I think Tom Holland is going to rock this role, and I hope we also get some fleshed out supporting characters.
